The modular energy storage system is based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) 280 Ah cells and is available in three capacity levels (107, 161 and 215 kWh). It supports all common applications such as self-consumption optimization, peak shaving and time-of-use optimization. The ESS includes a PCS (PCS2000-108K-MB1), a three-phase, four-wire power conversion system with an output of 108 kW.

With the LUNA2000-215 series – the result of three years of development – Huawei addresses all key challenges in commercial and utility-scale battery storage operation: safety, service life, usable capacity and system management. The core innovation of this new product is its highly efficient hybrid cooling architecture, as optimized thermal management is the single most effective lever for reducing efficiency losses.

Hybrid cooling makes the difference

Huawei’s concept combines liquid cooling and forced-air cooling. An intelligent „Thermal Router“, supported by an advanced thermal management system, adapts dynamically to ambient temperatures and additionally dehumidifies the interior, extending service life and protecting the system from efficiency losses.

The ESS is designed for an operating temperature range from -30 °C to +55 °C. At high temperatures, both the PCS and battery packs are actively cooled using automotive-grade coolants. In moderate temperature ranges, natural air cooling is sufficient. At low temperatures down to -10 °C, waste heat from the PCS is used to warm the battery modules, reducing power consumption. Below this threshold, a heat pump is activated.

Outstanding efficiency

The storage system achieves a round-trip efficiency of 91.3 %. This means that the proportion of stored energy that can be reused during discharge exceeds the industry standard. In the VDE field test, the LUNA2000-215-2S10 even reached 92 %, outperforming its datasheet specifications.

High level of safety

The modular system provides complete electrical and thermal protection from cell to consumer (C2C dual-link safety), including:

  • Six-sided insulation protection for each cell pack against corrosion and voltage (up to 1500 V)
  • Five-stage system overcurrent protection (shutdown within 5 ms in case of short circuit)
  • 24-hour residual current monitoring and rapid PCS shutdown
  • Thermal insulation and liquid cooling prevent thermal propagation between cells
  • Overpressure oxygen barrier: IP65 protection prevents oxygen ingress and reduces fire risk
  • Directional gas exhaust: flammable gases are safely discharged via an L-shaped channel, preventing burns and explosions
  • Integrated explosion and fire protection
    • Fire suppression system: gas-based fire extinguishing, enclosure fire-resistant for 1 hour
    • Top-mounted explosion pressure relief to protect surrounding areas

 

More energy

Each battery pack includes an energy optimizer 2.0 with a bidirectional balancing topology, enabling maximum efficiency and real-time active balancing without charge or discharge restrictions. This prevents module mismatch and results in up to 2 % more usable energy over the entire system lifetime.

Easier and more cost-effective installation

Unlike Huawei’s previous air-cooled generation, the current C&I storage system (maximum weight: 2.8 t) is delivered fully assembled. No on-site installation of battery modules or additional internal wiring is required.

Up to 20 systems with a total capacity of 4.3 MWh can be connected in parallel outdoors (in combination with 30 inverters), installed back-to-back or side-by-side with just 30 cm spacing.
This enables fast, cost-efficient installation without additional cabling or trenching – delivering higher capacity with a smaller footprint (W × H × D: 1150 × 2100 × 1800 mm).

If only ESS units are installed, up to 50 individual systems with a total capacity of 10.75 MWh (ESS only) can be combined.

A separation transformer is not required. A free coolant replacement for 10 years is included, reducing operating and maintenance costs.
