FAQ

Storage systems

  • What is the optimal size of battery storage system?

The battery storage system should be fitted to the local conditions. Important parameters that need to be taken into consideration are, for instance, the increase in self-consumption, the desired degree of self-sufficiency and the size of the solar power installation. These factors are decisive for the profitability of the storage system. The exact design should be checked by a specialist.

  • Do I need a battery inverter?

Yes, because the battery inverter is responsible for a continuous charging and discharging of the battery. It also times when electrical energy from the batteries is fed into the mains and supplies the necessary electrical energy, for example, at night.

The battery inverter also plays an important role in off-grid systems. It regulates the entire demand and distributes the energy to consumers. In case of a power outage, some battery inverters in combination with the solar battery system can be used as a backup system and provide for the electric power supply. Some battery inverters are independent units, whereas others form a hybrid unit with the solar inverter.

  • Where should the energy storage system be installed?

The storage system should be protected from direct sunlight. Due to noise emission, it is advisable not to install the storage in the immediate vicinity of the living area. In addition, an installation location should be chosen away from corrosive fumes, livestock or stored food. Further information on the installation can be found in the installation manuals of the respective manufacturer.

  • Are there different battery technologies?

Most battery systems consist of lithium or lead accumulators. Lithium accumulators are often used because they have a better efficiency, longer life cycles and a higher depth of discharge than lead accumulators. The dependant life-cycle price per stored kWh (Cent/kWh) of both variants is comparable.

  • Is it possible to retrofit my photovoltaic system with a storage system?

Basically, yes. If a hybrid inverter is already included in your photovoltaic system, you only need to connect and configure a suitable battery storage to this inverter. If a conventional inverter without a hybrid function is installed, a suitable battery inverter is required in addition to a battery storage system. If you have further questions about the design and installation, our staff will be happy to help you.

  • Is it possible to expand my installed battery system?

Some battery storage systems consist of individual battery modules in a storage cabinet. These systems are easily expandable by including further storage elements.

Other battery systems consist of a battery unit and the controlling unit in a closed system. In this case, a second battery system needs to be installed in order to expand the system. These two systems are then controlled by the battery inverters.

  • When do you recommend a battery storage system?

This question always has to be answered individually, as each solar power system (and the underlying conditions) is unique. However, some basic statements can be made:

A battery storage system is only useful when energy is needed, however, no energy can be produced by the photovoltaic system. If many consumers, such as coffee makers, dryers or washing machines, are used outside the sunshine hours, you can store the electricity which has been generated during the day in a battery and retrieve and use it, if necessary.

  • What is the maximum depth of discharge?

A solar battery should never be completely discharged in order to ensure a long lifetime. This parameter indicates how far the battery can be discharged.

  • What is the effective storage capacity?

This value is determined by the storage capacity and the battery’s depth of discharge. It indicates the storage capacity that is actually usable.
