31.08.2026 - SMA Storage XL – Storage Solution for Commercial Projects

We are continuing to expand our portfolio for C&I projects. The Storage XL Package from our long-standing partner SMA focuses on maximum efficiency, safety and flexibility. This complete package is designed for commercial battery storage projects requiring a scalable storage solution with integrated energy management and future backup functionality from a single source – while also being ideally prepared for the use of dynamic electricity tariffs.

As the successor to the SMA Commercial Storage Solution, it offers solar professionals straightforward installation, fast commissioning, and a high degree of prefabrication. Let’s take a closer look at the solution.

 

The Storage XL Package at a Glance

Sunny Tripower Storage X (STPS30-20 and. STPS50-20)

The complete solution includes the three-phase Sunny Tripower Storage X battery inverter (STPS30-20 and STPS50-20), with an output of 30 or 50 kW and 98% efficiency. For indoor installations, the unit can be mounted directly on a wall, while in outdoor applications it is installed on the side of the battery cabinet. Thanks to the integrated battery boost converter, the inverter offers high flexibility and enables even smaller battery capacities to be used economically. A System Manager is integrated as standard, allowing up to ten devices to be incorporated without any additional hardware. For more demanding applications with up to 50 devices, SMA recommends using an SMA Data Manager M. The four-wire topology on the AC side eliminates the need for an additional isolation transformer in backup power applications. The package also includes intelligent energy management based around the SMA Energy Maximizer, enabling functions such as self-consumption optimization, peak shaving and schedule-based operation. Monitoring is provided via the SMA Sunny Portal (powered by ennexOS).

The Sunny Tripower Storage X is combined with the new Storage XL Battery, available as an indoor version with 89 kWh (5 battery modules) or 197 kWh (11 battery modules), or as an outdoor version with 107 kWh (6 battery modules) or 197 kWh (11 battery modules). During installation later, you can expand all storage packages with up to four additional compatible battery cabinets from the SMA Storage XL family, connected in parallel to a single inverter. This range of configurations makes it possible to implement commercial projects of different sizes.

One System, Many Benefits

In addition to its scalability, the Storage XL Package offers the following benefits:

  • Exceptional service life: High-quality 280 Ah battery cells enable a 10-year performance warranty. It is designed for up to 12,000 charge and discharge cycles. During normal operation, the battery cells are operated at a maximum of 150 A. This reduces cell stress and extends service life, despite possible peak currents of up to 280 A. In addition, energy management via SMA Premium or SMA Energy Planner, including interval control for peak shaving, supports particularly long-lasting and efficient operation.

 

 

  • Fast and easy installation: The systems are delivered to you or your customers as turnkey solutions. Thanks to the high degree of pre-assembly, plug-and-play installation, and centralised commissioning via the user interface, setup is quick and straightforward.
  • Maximum safety: Safety is a top priority with the SMA Storage XL Package. Industry-leading cybersecurity, EU-based data hosting, including servers in Frankfurt am Main, and automatic updates provide reliable protection. All data traffic is routed exclusively through the Sunny Tripower Storage X, ensuring clearly defined and secure communication paths. Integrated safety features such as fire suppression, smoke and gas detection, and thermal management ensure maximum operational safety.
  • Wide operating temperature range: The outdoor battery features active HVAC, while the indoor version uses active, low-maintenance air cooling. This not only extends cell life but also improves battery efficiency. As a result, the batteries can operate efficiently across a wide temperature range even under demanding environmental conditions (outdoor version: -25°C to +55°C). As derating of both the Sunny Tripower Storage X and the battery begins at higher temperatures, power losses in hot conditions are reduced. At the same time, heating and cooling requirements, and the associated operating costs, are also reduced.

An Energy Meter must be integrated for operation of the SMA Storage XL Package. It is not included in the scope of delivery and must be ordered separately.

In addition to the hardware presented here (battery inverter and battery), SMA offers a range of additional services, such as support with the design of more complex systems as well as on-site commissioning or remote support. Please note: Certification is required if you wish to commission the SMA Storage XL Package yourself. Relevant training courses, webinars and video training are available from the SMA Solar Academy.

Once the product has been registered, SMA provides a 10-year warranty for the entire system. A separate performance warranty applies to the battery.
